Stress 101 - Relax Your Mind

Stress is defined as the effect your body experiences as it adjusts to ever-changing circumstances.
Richard S. Lazarus recognizes stress as, "a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilize."
With the ever-changing world we live in, it is unlikely that anyone can escape the pressures of stress. Whether it be work, money problems or personal situations, no one is immune to experiencing health problems due to stress.
Statistics show that 75 to 85% of all medical problems are stress-related. Knowing how to relieve stress is extremely important to your health and well-being. There are methods of coping with stress called the four As: avoid, alter, adapt and accept.
We need to find ways to avoid being "overwhelmed," alter situations to prevent stressors, adapt to our surroundings and accept the fact that things will not always be perfect and many things we cannot change. Try to concentrate on the things in your life that create stress and can be changed. Don't wait until things are beyond your control. Make a list of things that tend to push you "over the edge."
One of the most common practices of avoiding stress is to "escape" to a relaxing environment. Using your imagination to create and enjoy a situation that is relaxing is probably the easiest and quickest way to soothe your mind when things appear to be "out of control."
Relaxation is a process that decreases the effects of stress on your mind and body. Techniques include focusing your attention on something calming. As simple as visualizing taking a journey to a peaceful, calming place.
Rejuvenate yourself by creating a tranquil environment to mask distractions. The sounds and sights of nature top the list in providing an escape to whatever the stressor is in your life.
There are many videos that can be accessed to help provide you with a sense of comfort. The sounds of water seem to be one of the most widely used methods to help you ease your mind. Whether it be a waterfall, falling rain or water silently hitting the shore, it is probably the most effective form of relieving stress and relaxing.
Everyone's metabolism is different. Create a "calm" environment that suits your lifestyle and needs. Take a few minutes a day to visit your comfort zone and provide yourself with the relaxation you need. Surprisingly, the quiet meditation may be the cure to your problem with stress!
